THE NEW SAUDI LIFE
Click here to see the rest of the photo seriesat VII The Magazine.
On Sunday September 25, 12011, King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia on Sunday granted women the right to vote and run in future municipal elections, the biggest change in a decade for women in a puritanical kingdom that practices strict separation of the sexes, including banning women from driving. Lynsey Addario takes a look at this traditionally closed society and specifically the modern city of Jeddah which has been opening up. Saudi’s flood the shopping malls, cafe’s and even lakes in search of recreation and fun. Though still governed by tradition and cultural taboo, women are holding jobs and some even daring to drive.

SAUDI ARABIA
“The first things I saw in Saudi were the big empty roads and houses with impossibly high walls. Everything seemed to be happening somewhere else, out of sight, behind closed doors.”
I really love this series by photographer Olivia Arthur. Check out more of this work and order the book on her website, www.oliviaarthur.com.

WOMAN IN NATURE المرأة في الطبيعة
For best viewing results, view in 1080p or 720p HD
A merging of abstraction and reality in a document of a woman in nature by the sea. She transcends between a tangible human state and a mystical existence. Pairing themes of mother earth and the natural environment with this woman intends to remove extraneous elements from the woman and the abaya, creating a sense of mystery, humanity, and understanding all at once; an expression and celebration of this woman and all women, free of inhibiting and judgmental ideologies.
